Children in Ethiopia
From February 8 to 20, 2009
During my trip to Ethiopia in February 2009 I met a few Ethiopian children, teens and young adults. I was agreeably surprised at their knowledge of a foreign language, in this case English -
which they learn in addition to Amharic (the national language) and their own tribe dialect - as compared to children in most European countries.
Though they very often have to walk for hours to go to school, which is far away, they make this effort because they are eager to learn.
They are also lacking school material badly; sometimes they don’t even have pencils for writing. But all these children praise school and strive for learning.
In Western countries, children are spoiled by having beyond their needs; and they complain when asked to do any effort...

Play performance in Romania

When I visited Romania, following a collaboration with the
Tismana high school, a group of children performed my theatre play
Penguin and the Fig Tree.
This play was again brought to stage at the end-of-the-school-year celebrations and also performed on August 15 2006, during the Festival of the Fig that takes place every year at Svinita, a town on the southern part of the country, on the borders of the Danube.

Schools in France
May 23rd, 2002
I was invited to visit four schools in France (in the area of Longwy) that had bought my book L'Aventure de Barry.
The stories had been read and worked together in the classrooms. It was a pioneer activity promoted by the Ministry of Education that ended up in my meeting together with the children,
talking with them about the stories, and answering their questions about my career and the reason for writing the book.
It was a very rewarding experience in as much as in one classroom the stories had inspired the children to write a few poems.
It was an agreeable surprise - also for the teachers - and an assurance for me that my stories successfully met the public for whom I wrote them in the first place - children.
Reading the poems is a joy just at a click away from your finger. |

Time for a Tale in Portugal
December 19, 2001
Time for a Tale took place at Centro de Estudos Pé Direito, in Sassoeiros, Portugal.
Its aim was to improve the children's understanding of the English language through the reading of stories.
The choice fell on Penguin and the Fig Tree -
a story about a dog who loves figs and has mysterious and queer habits.
